Produce Containing The Most Pesticide Residue in 2021

The Organic Wine Company Posted on March 31, 2021 by adminMarch 31, 2021

Every year, the Environmental Working Group releases what they call their “Dirty Dozen,” a list outlining the fruits and vegetables that contain the highest levels of pesticide residue for that year. Conversely, they also compile a list of those containing the lowest levels of pesticide residue, called the “Clean Fifteen”. These lists are based on testing conducted annually by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration, which sample over 46,000 crops in order to conduct their research. All produce is washed and peeled before testing, in order to best imitate how people would eat them at … Continue reading →

Help Save Ailing Monarch Butterfly Populations

The Organic Wine Company Posted on March 10, 2021 by adminMarch 31, 2021

Monarch butterfly populations are endangered. Habitat destruction, insecticides and herbicides have all contributed to their steep decline in the last few decades. Losing Monarchs wouldn’t simply be tragic because of their beauty. The disruption it would cause in an ecosystem that depends on their existence that would signal something awful for the fate of the natural world. Without getting too heavy into specifics, caterpillars are a critical food source for most songbirds, which rely heavily on insects to feed their young. Butterflies, like bees, are also important pollinators. They help plants produce seeds, which also feed birds and other wildlife … Continue reading →

Sign The Pesticide Action Network’s Petition For The Ban of Harmful Chemicals

The Organic Wine Company Posted on February 10, 2021 by adminMarch 31, 2021

We thought this week needed a little extra activism. Congress has just interviewed Michael Regan for the job of EPA Administrator. And while the Biden Administration has already agreed to review the last administration’s decision to rollback bans on the “brain-harming chemical insecticide chlorpyrifos and their reduced protections for farmworkers from pesticide drift.” While these are steps in the right direction, the Pesticide Action Network (PAN) is asking that they take even more aggressive steps toward protection from harmful chemicals and insecticides. They are gathering signatures for a petition they will be sending to the White House, asking for the … Continue reading →

Save The Honeybees!

Help Save the Honeybees!

When I was a small child, my great grandfather raised bees on the family vineyard, Domaine de la Bousquette in the South of France. After World War II, everyone began using pesticides on their vines and by the mid 1970s my grandfather, who was a physician, could see the toll that these poisons were taking on the vines, the workers, and the soil. He decided to adopt the then novel approach of using organic growing methods, and by 1980 we were among the very first organic wine growers in France. Banned from our property were chemical fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides. … Continue reading →

Vegan Wines, And Pairing Wine With Vegan Food

The Organic Wine Company Posted on January 28, 2021 by adminMarch 31, 2021
Wine pairing: an underestimated vegan challenge

The number of vegans has grown drastically in the last few years, and although this lifestyle is becoming more and more common, those who are committed to it are faced with many challenges of which wine is no exception. Here’s the first problem: the farming of conventionally-grown grapes involves a great deal of pesticides and other chemicals which are very harmful to the environment and damage the ecosystem. In addition, all wines are not necessarily vegan. In fact, many of the substances that may be used as fining agents are animal-derived. For example: casein (milk protein), chitin (fiber from crustacean … Continue reading →

Can Drinking Wine Ward Off Depression?

The Organic Wine Company Posted on December 19, 2020 by adminMarch 31, 2021

There seems to be a clear connection between Stay-At-Home orders and people’s urges to consume alcohol. Drinking in varied capacities seems to be the collective pastime of the moment, and in the absence of bars and restaurants, people are digging into their cellars, signing up for wine memberships, and teaching themselves how to make their own cocktails. We also all seem to be struggling to stay positive in light of all that is happening-which is perfectly normal given the circumstances-but with things ramping up again, we thought now would be a good time to explore the question: Is there a … Continue reading →

Do Sulfites Really Cause “Red Wine Headaches?”

The Organic Wine Company Posted on December 5, 2020 by adminMarch 31, 2021

Drinkers tend to blame sulfites in red wine for a range of health issues, including breathing difficulties, allergy symptoms and headaches, but the jury is still out on whether sulfites are actually the culprit. Histamines, which are produced by yeast and bacteria, and Tyramine, an organic compound in red wine, have also been cited as possible causes. But while white wine generally contains more sulfites, they are more often associated with red wine. In fact, many of the foods we eat have far higher sulfite levels than those that naturally occur in wine. Given all of this, it stands to … Continue reading →

Organic Wines: A Sip in the Right Direction

The Organic Wine Company Posted on November 26, 2020 by adminMarch 31, 2021

At The Organic Wine Company, we believe that organic growing is both the honorable past and the certain future of the wine industry. More and more people are coming to the realization that the application of massive amounts of pesticides and chemical fertilizers are harmful to the environment, public health, and our own bodies. This holds true for agriculture in general, but for viticulture specifically. Grapes receive one of the highest doses of pesticides, and wine grapes are sprayed even more than table grapes. We are asking wine lovers to take a stand as responsible consumers by supporting a … Continue reading →

The Bottom Line About Arsenic In Wine

The Organic Wine Company Posted on March 27, 2015 by adminNovember 29, 2020

Should you be worried about it?
The world is all abuzz about recent news that wine has dangerous levels of arsenic.  With headlines like that, who wouldn’t panic? We wanted to find out the whole story so we did some old-fashioned research and we found that arsenic naturally occurs in air, soil, water, and clay, but it can also be introduced into wine through pesticide residue and other methods. A class action lawsuit was filed in the California Superior Court alleging that certain wines contain trace amounts of arsenic that pose a risk to consumers.  The wines tested at the … Continue reading →

Why I Drink Organic Wine, By Peter Rieks

The Organic Wine Company Posted on June 17, 2014 by adminMarch 31, 2021
Why I Drink Organic Wine

I am not really much of a wine drinker. And, I have to say that I never go down the organic aisle in my supermarket as my perception is that organic wines always come at a premium. But then I started doing some work for Veronique on the OWC website and she would send me home with bottles of wine which my wife and I would drink. It was lovely wine and we enjoyed it. It wasn’t long before I started to develop a taste and an appreciation for good wine. A few months ago my job required that I … Continue reading →
