What’s the Difference Between “Natural wines,” “Organic Wines” & “Organically Grown Wines?”

The Organic Wine Company Posted on April 7, 2021 by adminApril 10, 2021

The term “natural” as a wine descriptor has occurred more frequently  in recent years. So, what is difference between “natural wine” and “organic wine” and “organically grown wine?” The answer is nuanced, but we’ll break it down as best we can. Essentially, there are 4 tiers of “Organic Wine” available in the U.S. today. Here’s what you can expect to find in the Organic Wine section at the store: “Wines made with Organic grapes” also known as “Organically Grown Wines”:   These are made with Certified Organic grapes and with carefully regulated added sulfites. These account for the bulk of wines … Continue reading →

Help Save Ailing Monarch Butterfly Populations

The Organic Wine Company Posted on March 10, 2021 by adminMarch 31, 2021

Monarch butterfly populations are endangered. Habitat destruction, insecticides and herbicides have all contributed to their steep decline in the last few decades. Losing Monarchs wouldn’t simply be tragic because of their beauty. The disruption it would cause in an ecosystem that depends on their existence that would signal something awful for the fate of the natural world. Without getting too heavy into specifics, caterpillars are a critical food source for most songbirds, which rely heavily on insects to feed their young. Butterflies, like bees, are also important pollinators. They help plants produce seeds, which also feed birds and other wildlife … Continue reading →

Sign The Pesticide Action Network’s Petition For The Ban of Harmful Chemicals

The Organic Wine Company Posted on February 10, 2021 by adminMarch 31, 2021

We thought this week needed a little extra activism. Congress has just interviewed Michael Regan for the job of EPA Administrator. And while the Biden Administration has already agreed to review the last administration’s decision to rollback bans on the “brain-harming chemical insecticide chlorpyrifos and their reduced protections for farmworkers from pesticide drift.” While these are steps in the right direction, the Pesticide Action Network (PAN) is asking that they take even more aggressive steps toward protection from harmful chemicals and insecticides. They are gathering signatures for a petition they will be sending to the White House, asking for the … Continue reading →

Save The Honeybees!

Help Save the Honeybees!

When I was a small child, my great grandfather raised bees on the family vineyard, Domaine de la Bousquette in the South of France. After World War II, everyone began using pesticides on their vines and by the mid 1970s my grandfather, who was a physician, could see the toll that these poisons were taking on the vines, the workers, and the soil. He decided to adopt the then novel approach of using organic growing methods, and by 1980 we were among the very first organic wine growers in France. Banned from our property were chemical fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides. … Continue reading →

Organic Wines: A Sip in the Right Direction

The Organic Wine Company Posted on November 26, 2020 by adminMarch 31, 2021

At The Organic Wine Company, we believe that organic growing is both the honorable past and the certain future of the wine industry. More and more people are coming to the realization that the application of massive amounts of pesticides and chemical fertilizers are harmful to the environment, public health, and our own bodies. This holds true for agriculture in general, but for viticulture specifically. Grapes receive one of the highest doses of pesticides, and wine grapes are sprayed even more than table grapes. We are asking wine lovers to take a stand as responsible consumers by supporting a … Continue reading →

May 8th 1945, Honoring Courage Every Chance We Get

The Organic Wine Company Posted on May 8, 2017 by adminMarch 31, 2021
May 8th 1945

Dear Friends, What if courage was the real ‘it ‘factor in our lives? That has certainly been true in my own life, where clearly my worst mistakes were due to my lack of courage. But today is not about me and I am getting ahead of myself. Le 8 Mai (May 8th) is a major day in the French culture. today we honor the courage of millions. Notably, it takes quite a mensch to run towards danger and possible death in order to stand for what is right, when every instinct wants us to run in the opposite direction. Yet … Continue reading →

Do You Believe in Biodynamic Farming?

The Organic Wine Company Posted on December 8, 2015 by adminMarch 31, 2021

Dear Friends, I am pleased to say that our audience, the people who seek out and enjoy our wines are typically educated, open-minded folks, eager to learn and to grow. Not a day goes by without my being asked a provocative question that leads to very exciting exchanges. I just love these direct interactions. One of the regular questions I get asked is “What is biodynamic farming?” The article below has just crossed my desk, and with the full permission of its author, Roberta Cicchitti, I am pleased to be able to share it with you now. Read, enjoy, check … Continue reading →

In Conversation with Pesticide Action Network

In Conversation with Pesticide Action Network

Veronique Raskin is owner and founder of The Organic Wine Company in San Francisco. In February, Veronique sat down with PAN to tell us more about her passion for organics and organic wine. Q: What led you to take an interest in organic wine? To be blunt: my love for my family, my ancestor’s land, my passionate interest in health/wholeness and the fact that I discovered that my grandfather’s organic wines were the only wines that I could drink without feeling indescribably unwell, headachy, etc. So to backtrack, La Bousquette has been in my family since the French Revolution … Continue reading →

Crossing Over, By Kaitlyn Pintor

The Organic Wine Company Posted on March 11, 2014 by adminMarch 31, 2021
Crossing over by Kaitlyn Pintor

Crossing Over by Kaitlyn Pintor Alright already. I admit it. I am slowly going organic. Yes, I said slowly, but the important word here is “GOING”.  Slowly, because I have decided to do it my way.  Going, because I’d like to think I am intelligent enough to understand the reality of what’s happening in the environment, and because my own health demands a change. RESISTANCE For those of you who have always been organic, you may not have noticed that you stand out.  In fact, you are quite frankly a little intimidating.  What held me back from choosing organic were … Continue reading →

Pesticides Linked To Neurological Disease

The Organic Wine Company Posted on September 18, 2013 by adminMarch 31, 2021

Article from wine-searcher.com: A study in Bordeaux has grim news for vineyard workers. Vineyard workers and farmers in southwest France who have been exposed to pesticides during their working life suffer from reduced levels of brain activity, new research has found. The study was done by Anses, the French agency for food, environmental and occupational health and safety. “The tests confirmed that there was a deterioration in cognitive ability in those exposed to pesticides,” said Dr Isabelle Baldi, a specialist in occupational health at the University of Bordeaux Segalen. Viticulturists in Bordeaux exposed to pesticides and fungicides as well as … Continue reading →
