White Wines

We've all heard of California Chardonnay, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, and of course, the zippy press-spin, "California's New Chardonnay": Viognier. But long before their introduction into "new world" wine regions, these lovely grapes were living and thriving in the most prestigious appellations of France. Only, their wines were not referred to by their own names, but by the names of their "neighborhoods," if you will.

Without question, the most popular white wine grape in the world is the hearty and ubiquitous Chardonnay grape. Sunny and friendly, this blond bombshell thrives almost everywhere. But her symbolic and literal home is France's Burgundy region. Though other areas in the world are producing quite lovely Chardonnays, if you're wanting to know this elegant blonde better, visit her in her original French form, found in white Burgundies and Chablis.

Though the New Zealanders are really doing wonders with Sauvignon Blanc, this dry, crisp grape's roots remain firmly planted in France's Loire Valley. Here she is found in the French wines Pouilly Fuse and Sancerre. If you're wanting to see how Sauvignon Blanc plays with others, don't hesitate to check out her partnership with the Semillon grape, as found in lovely wines from Bordeaux called Sauternes.

If you've been paying attention to cooking channels and wine-enthusiast magazines, then you've doubtlessly heard of a grape called Viognier. Perhaps new to mainstream Americans, Viognier is an elegant old thing indeed, with its true home in the Rhone region of France. For the finest examples, look for wines from Condrieu.
