Vegan WinesAwareness about vegetarian and vegan issues around the world was heightened, particularly in the United Kingdom, in the light of BSE or "mad cow disease". Both organic and non-organic winemakers frequently use animal products during production to clear or "fine" the wine to keep it from turning cloudy for example, or to remove "off" tastes and flavors. "All our wines are vegetarian friendly, since the only fining agents used are derived from milk and eggs (caseine and albumine). However, following the growing demand, our list of vegan wines is growing steadily." For a wine to be classified as vegan, no animal derived products of any kind can be used in the clarification/fining process. We carry a selection of organic/vegan red, white, sparkling and dessert wines, and we offer a Vegan 3-bottle sampler.
Biodynamic WinesSince the early 1980's, we have been importing a delicious Côtes-du-Rhône red wine from our friend Dominique Pons. His Domaine des Cèdres is produced biodynamically. Pierre André does the same with his Châteauneuf-du Pape. We have recently added Château Romanin from Provence and a Muscadet from Guy Bossard. Like organic farming, biodynamic growers emphasize establishing healthy soil. They use very small dosages of compost starters made from a balance of sources (mineral, vegetal and animal) and field sprays, as well as stringent vinification processes. This method of agriculture, developed in the early part of the 20th century, is based on the theories of Rudolf Steiner, who believed the position of the moon and the stars within certain constellations influenced the growth of leaves, roots, flowers, and fruits. Biodynamic farmers plant and tend their crops according to a precise calendar which monitors where the energy is most active in the plant each particular day. In short, the goal of biodynamic farming is to be in tune with the totality of life forces affecting the growth of the plant in order to produce the most balanced and healthy crop possible.
