Organic Wines

If you're confused about organic wines, then you're not alone. Different countries have different definitions as to what, precisely, makes a wine organic. In Europe, an organic wine is one which is made using grapes and farming techniques which are earth- and nutrition-friendly, and with a minimum (usually 40 to 60 parts per million) of sulfites.

In the United States, however, an "organic wine" is one that meets all these earth and nutrition-friendly requirements--but has no added sulfites. And this is where the confusion begins. The USDA has stated that, because some individuals have an allergic reaction to sulfites, wines which are labelled "organic" must be free of added sulfites. "Added" is in italics here, because there is no such thing as sulfite-free wine. Sulfites are a naturally occurring phenomenon during the fermentation process.

Therefore, domestic "organic" wines are those which are made without additional sulfites. So what's the big deal? The big deal is that adding just a few sulfites helps makes wines stable and drinkable. They are the insurance that the $7, or $20, or $40 bucks you've just paid really is for a lovely wine, not just for overpriced vinegar. When you buy wines that are made without the addition of extra sulfites, you're taking this chance each and every time. One bottle may be fine. The one next to it, who knows?

At the Organic Wine Company, we hold fast to the standards held dear by the European wine-making masters. Our wines are made from 100 percent organic grapes. We carry wines made by smaller wineries you may not have heard of, who nonetheless have been perfecting their family craft for hundreds years, over multiple generations. If you've tried so-called organic wines from the United States and found them lacking, now you know why. Thank you for your interest in organic wines, and for visiting us today at The Organic Wine company.
