    Wine 101

You've heard the names over and over. And, you've even had (let's just say) more than few bottles. But, for many of us, learning and remembering grape varietals and their characteristics is no easy task. So, for the next three issues, we're going to cover some of the best-known varietals and what it is that makes them memorable.

    1. Chardonnay -- Chardonnay is a white wine which can range from clean and crisp with a hint of varietal flavor to rich and complex, oak-aged wines. Chardonnay typically balances fruit, acidity and texture, with or without the added complexity of oak. Part of the attraction of Chardonnay for wine makers and drinkers alike is its versatility. This varietal goes well with everything from fish and poultry to cheeses, spicy foods and nut sauces. In 2001, Chardonnay stood eight-ranked in global planting of grape varieties and is particularly popular in the United States, France, Australia and Italy.

    2. Sauvignon Blanc -- Sauvignon Blanc is a white wine best known for its grassy, herbal flavors. Sauvignon Blanc is also called Fume Blanc and is a popular choice for fish and shellfish dishes. It is also known as one of the few wines that can pair well with sushi. Along with Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc was one of the first fine wines to be bottled with a screw cap in commercial quantities, especially by New Zealand producers. The wine is best consumed young as it does not particularly benefit from aging, although there are exceptions.

    3. Pinot Gris / Pinot Grigio -- Wines made from the Pinot Gris wine grape vary greatly and are dependent on the region and wine making style they are from. The low acidity of this white varietal helps produce rich, lightly perfumed wines that are often more colorful than other whites. The best ones have pear and spice-cake flavors. Due to the grape's rising popularity, Pinot Gris / Pinot Grigio sales are expected to overtake White Zinfandel as the fourth best selling varietal in the U.S. by the end of the year. Pinot Gris is considered an "early-to-market wine" that can be bottled and out on the market within four to 12 weeks after fermentation. The clone of Pinot Gris grown in Italy is known as Pinot Grigio..

Next issue: Muscat, Champagne / Sparkling Wine, Gewurztraminer and Riesling.

Blackberries: Top 10 in Antioxidant Capacity

As delicious as blackberries are -- they're a lot more than a sweet summer treat. Blackberries are low in calories, low on the glycemic index, are an excellent source of fiber, vitamins (B, C, E), minerals, ellagic acid (a potent cancer fighter) and antioxidants.

In fact, according to the USDA, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries all rank in the Top 10 in antioxidant capacity of more than 100 common foods. And, research published in the July 2006 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition ranked blackberries as far and away the most antioxidant-rich food (on the basis of a typical single serving) out of more than 1,100 types tested.

Some of the most potent antioxidants in berries are called anthocyanins. They are responsible for the purplish-black color of blackberries and blueberries and have been shown to fight everything from heart disease and cancer to memory loss.

So, whether you pick them yourself at a berry farm, grab some at your local produce market, or buy them fresh or frozen at the grocery store, blackberries make a healthy snack. Add them to your cereal, make a cobbler, or top off your salad, ice cream or smoothie with them. Or, make a blackberry margarita.
