Chianti Wines
Forget those long-held suppositions about Chianti. Yes, yes, Chianti was a joke there for awhile. Criticized for its plebeian appeal, and its self-consciously cute straw-wrapped bottles, Chianti fell out of world-wide favor in a big way after it glutted the market in the mid-'70s. But, the new Chiantis are so dramatically different from the old ones that they very wine governing body of Italy, the DOC, had to revise their suffocatingly restrictive legislation in terms of how Chianti was made.
The new Chiantis are still light and refreshing, but now they allow the wonderful and under-rated Sangiovese grape to fully shine. But don't let the new "finish" mislead you. Today's Chianti is a lot like a hometown-girl-made-good. Time and experience have matured her and made her more elegant. She's an excellent conversationalist, and comfortable at the opera and the yacht club. However, even though they know her name at Le Cirque, she's just as happy at a picnic in the backyard with old friends.
Chianti, even with its new fabulous image and much better taste, is still the perfect choice for all varieties of fun foods. Barbecue, ribs, pizza, hamburgers--the old foods are still friendly with Chianti. But, you can also "take it out in public" and pair it with foods you might not have thought of in the old days, like chicken, turkey, or smoked salmon.
Be advised, however... Sangiovese as a stand-alone grape is completely poised to become immensely popular. Feeling that what is needed is not a "new-world Chianti" but rather a "new world Sangiovese," plantings are on the upswing all over the globe. You can be sure that The Organic Wine Company will be following this little grape very closely. We have done so for years, and are thrilled to see it receiving so much well-deserved attention.
