Gamay Beaujolais
Chateau de Boisfranc -- Château de Boisfranc is located on the plateau of Jarnioux in the heart of the Beaujolais region of Eastern France. Here, the Gamay grape reigns supreme. It is made into a popular "nouveau" wine each November and flown quickly to the U.S. for celebrations around Thanksgiving. In France, the region's nouveau wine traditionally was shipped to Paris bistros each fall, where it was enjoyed as a light quaffing wine to celebrate the new vintage.Gamay's ripe, sensuous fruit flavors make it an ideal nouveau wine, but it also can be made into a heartier springtime wine to enjoy for 1-2 years after bottling, when it is at its peak of freshness and flavor.Thierry Doat has taken over this estate from his father Robert. Both men began conversion to organic agriculture in 1982. Today, the estate vineyards carry the certification of Biofranc and Ecocert, two French organizations that support organic farmers.Château de Boisfranc's vines are close to 60 years old and produce less than younger vines, but . . .

Rosso Toscano
Casina di Cornia -- Casina di Cornia is a small estate situated in the heart of the Tuscan hills of Italy. The vineyards exposed to the southwest are planted with the grape varieties of the Chianti: Sangiovese & Canaiolo for the red wine, and Trebbiano & Malvasia for the white.Since 1980, the estate has been cultivated according to the methods of organic agriculture. In order for the wine to maintain its genuine quality and perfume, intervention on the grapes and wine are kept to a minimum. This begins with a pruning policy which reduces the average yield to just 50hl/hectare (or 500 gallons per acre). During harvest, in order to avoid bruising the fruit, grapes are collected by hand in small crates. In the cellar, the vinification is conducted with accurate control of temperature and oxidation. For the past 12 years, Casina di Cornia has been a member ECOCERT, an independent organic certification agency. In addition, the estate co-founded “Coordinamento Toscano Produttori Biologici,” an Italian cooperative . . .

Syrah
Domaine des Cedres -- Domaine des Cèdres is located in a small commune in France's Southern Rhône Valley. Often called a "Blessed Region," the Rhône Valley is in a climate that is ideal for grape growing. The vineyard features several plots on hillsides which have a stony, clayey and calcareous soil which are friendly to vines and little else. The stones absorb the hot summer sun and then reflect warmth onto the vines at night. The climate is Mediterranean, although the Mistral, a cold northerly wind that can endure for days on end, is a feature of the Southern Rhône. The dry Mistral winds, however, minimize vine disease and dry out the vineyard if hit with summer rains.Domaine des Cèdres winemaker, Dominique Pons, is a true pioneer of organic viticulture. He has been into organic winemaking for at least 20 years, and was one of the first in the Côtes-du-Rhône AOC to go organic. In addition, he's been studying and applying the principles of Biodynamic farming at Domaine des Cèdres for several years, and is involved . . .

Cuvée Cinq Filles
Domaine de Clairac -- This fruity, spicy red wine is grown just west of the ancient city of Beziers, in the Languedoc region of southern France. Francoise Jougla, the owner of Domaine de Clairac, and her father Claude, have been involved in French organic viticulture since its rebirth during the 1960s. Their expertise in the field is widely respected throughout France. The health and richness of their wines, and the vines where they come from, reflect the decades of biological activity maintained in their soils. Francoise has been managing the family estate and all winemaking with a palate educated since childhood. The 2003 vintage is a blend of 70% Grenache, 10% each Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Grenache expresses much of the flavor and body common to Languedoc red wines. Merlot and Cabernet add finesse and ripe fruit flavors. The result is a very robust and drinkable wine with an aromatic nose and spicy, fruity taste. It is a good wine for any lighter meat or cheese dishes as well as grilled . . .

Muscadet sur lie
Guy Bossard -- Guy Bossard is another of those winegrowers who converted to certified organic methods for health reasons, after his father became very ill from agro-chemicals. Certified since 1975, he now produces one of the best ranges of wines in the Muscadet region, organic or otherwise, from just a little over 50 acres. Grapes are always hand picked and shire horses are used to plough the oldest plots.Excellent Muscadet from one of the top producers in the region. A light, very dry wine with a slight spritz.
