2006 Gamay Beaujolais
Chateau de Boisfranc 2006 Gamay Beaujolais
Chateau de Boisfranc
-- Château de Boisfranc is located on the plateau of Jarnioux in the heart of the Beaujolais region of Eastern France. Here, the Gamay grape reigns supreme. It is made into a popular "nouveau" wine each November and flown quickly to the U.S. for celebrations around Thanksgiving. In France, the region's nouveau wine traditionally was shipped to Paris bistros each fall, where it was enjoyed as a light quaffing wine to celebrate the new vintage.Gamay's ripe, sensuous fruit flavors make it an ideal nouveau wine, but it also can be made into a heartier springtime wine to enjoy for 1-2 years after bottling, when it is at its peak of freshness and flavor.Thierry Doat has taken over this estate from his father Robert. Both men began conversion to organic agriculture in 1982. Today, the estate vineyards carry the certification of Biofranc and Ecocert, two French organizations that support organic farmers.Château de Boisfranc's vines are close to 60 years old and produce less than younger vines, but . . .

2008 Cotes-du-Rhone
Domaine des Cedres 2008 Cotes-du-Rhone
Domaine des Cedres
-- Domaine des Cèdres is located in a small commune in France's Southern Rhône Valley. Often called a "Blessed Region," the Rhône Valley is in a climate that is ideal for grape growing. The vineyard features several plots on hillsides which have a stony, clayey and calcareous soil which are friendly to vines and little else. The stones absorb the hot summer sun and then reflect warmth onto the vines at night. The climate is mediterranean, although the Mistral, a cold northerly wind that can endure for days on end, is a feature of the Southern Rhône. The dry Mistral winds, however, minimize vine disease and dry out the vineyard if hit with summer rains.Domaine des Cèdres winemaker, Dominique Pons, is a true pioneer of organic viticulture. He has been into organic winemaking for at least 20 years, and was one of the first in the Côtes-du-Rhône AOC to go organic. In order for the wine to maintain its genuine quality and perfume, intervention on the grapes and wine are kept to a minimum. This begins with a pruning policy which reduces the average yield to just 50hl/hectare (or 500 gallons per acre). During harvest, in order to avoid bruising the fruit, grapes are collected by hand in small crates. In the cellar, the vinification is conducted with accurate control of temperature and oxidation. For the past 12 years, Casina di Cornia has been a member ECOCERT, an independent organic certification agency. 2005 Dolcetto d’Asti
Mario Torelli 2005 Dolcetto d’Asti
Mario Torelli
-- Dolcetto grapes from seven areas of Northern Italy have received their Denominazione di Origine Controllata recognition; among them is the Dolcetto d’Asti. Dolcetto d’Asti is made in the Monferrato, the area in Piedmont where winemaking is most extensively pursued. This is a light and intriguingly balanced wine, between dusty softness and a hard note of bitterness. A popular cafe wine in northern Italy, Dolcetto makes a young wine which is easy to drink and can be served with many varied dishes of moderate structure. Its spicy, fruity qualities would especially highlight antipasto and lighter Italian dishes, grilled meats and many vegetarian dishes. Mario and Gianfranco Torelli’s Casina Milana at Bubbio, in the heart of the Asti Langa, is an example of the tremendous potential of wines grown on these hills. The steep slopes provide a very precious soil and environment well-suited to growing varieties such as Moscato and Dolcetto. The Torellis understand their land and take advantage . . .

Organic agriculture is another tradition in this family, who began using these methods in 1963 and converted fully in 1980. The André wine blends major elements of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre with smaller amounts of Cinsault, Counoise, Picpoul, and Muscardin. Their vines average 60 years old with some parcels exceeding 100 years!
