Domaine des Cèdres
-- Domaine des Cèdres is located in a small commune in France's Southern Rhône Valley. Often called a "Blessed Region," the Rhône Valley is in a climate that is ideal for grape growing. The vineyard features several plots on hillsides which have a stony, clayey and calcareous soil which are friendly to vines and little else. The stones absorb the hot summer sun and then reflect warmth onto the vines at night. The climate is Mediterranean, although the Mistral, a cold northerly wind that can endure for days on end, is a feature of the Southern Rhône. The dry Mistral winds, however, minimize vine disease and dry out the vineyard if hit with summer rains.Domaine des Cèdres winemaker, Dominique Pons, is a true pioneer of organic viticulture. He has been into organic winemaking for at least 20 years, and was one of the first in the Côtes-du-Rhône AOC to go organic. In addition, he's been studying and applying the principles of Biodynamic farming at Domaine des Cèdres for several years, and is . . .

Coteaux du Languedoc
Domaine Didier

NO ADDED SULFITES RED!
-- Back in January, in the French town of Narbonne, we met (my dear friend and assistant Claudia, our partner Paul Chartrand and myself) with Didier Cabannes, a local winemaker. This simple presentation around a table and a few glasses ended up lasting 2 hours such was the interest this man and his wines generated! First, let me tell you that Didier does not go around unnoticed! Massive, solidly planted, with powerful hands, a good smile and a strong regional accent, you’re bound to remember the encounter! To begin with, Didier is a healer, and not one sanctioned by a diploma but one who has so much energy in his hands that he HAS to offer it to the people he is drawn to! This side of his personality alone was worth the meeting but then he went on to explain how he brought to his vineyard his exceptional perception of energy in living things. How he takes every conceivable step from the ground up to end up with wines that have a rare flavor of authenticity! This was a fascinating discussion, . . .

Pierre André

Hot Year, Hot Wine!
-- Pierre André and his daughter continue a family tradition of producing powerful red wines from their thirty six acres of vines in Courthezon, between Orange and Avignon in southern France. Organic agriculture is another tradition in this family, who began using these methods in 1963 and converted fully in 1980. They have also practiced biodynamic viticulture, and have been certified biodynamic by Demeter since 1990. Wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape are made from a blend of up to thirteen grape varieties. The André wine blends major elements of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre with smaller amounts of Cinsault, Counoise, Picpoul, and Muscardin. Their vines average 60 years old with some parcels exceeding 100 years! Diverse soil types and a southern exposure give these vines excellent conditions for production of balanced, healthy wines that will develop for many years after the harvest. The 2000 vintage invites you to travel through layers upon layers of gustatory revelations. It is the kind of . . .

With oysters!
-- Guy Bossard is another of those winegrowers who converted to certified organic methods for health reasons, after his father became very ill from agro-chemicals. Certified since 1975, he now produces one of the best ranges of wines in the Muscadet region, organic or otherwise, from just a little over 50 acres. Grapes are always hand picked and shire horses are used to plough the oldest plots.Excellent Muscadet from one of the top producers in the region. A light, very dry wine with a slight spritz. Good intense fruit flavors from fermenting “on lees.” Its tart citrus-like acidity refreshes and pleases the palate. From the French Atlantic seacoast, it is a perfect choice for lighter meals or as an aperitif.VEGANAOC Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur Lie; 100% Melon de BourgogneAlcohol Content: 12%AGING POTENTIAL : 3 to 4 years
